Question:

Hi Shauna

I have a question about my emergency procedures.  I have never had a cutaway and want to know how I can practice my emergency procedures on the ground without actually having to do it in the air?

Thank You
Michael

Hi Michael

Thanks for asking!  Being a rigger and having many at our dropzone, we are able to afford our jumpers and students the opportunity to practice their emergency procedures when they are due for a reserve repack.  When a jumper brings us their rig to be repacked, we have them put their rigs on and go through exactly what they would do, in sequence, if they had a malfunction and had to pull their handles.

Many jumpers find the thought of a cutaway intimidating and scary.  Jump long enough and you’ll probably experience a cutaway.  Practicing in a non-stress environment gives the jumper a chance to feel how much force it actually takes to pull a handle from the Velcro.

If you don’t have your own gear, ask your dropzones rigger is there is rental gear that is due for a repack and that you’d like an opportunity to practice your E.P’s at its next reserve repack.  Some dropzones may have hanging harness that you can utilize to practice as well.
